Admissions
VCS seeks a broad mix of children from diverse backgrounds. While the children we accept will be different from each other in many ways, we do look for families who have in common an understanding of and appreciation for our educational philosophy and practice, and who believe that their children and our setting are well suited to each other.
Although the majority of the children in the school come from Greenwich Village and other lower Manhattan neighborhoods, our sense of community is not a geographic concept. We welcome applications from families from the entire city area as well as from neighboring New Jersey communities.
The Process
- The process begins with a request for an application, brochure, and school tour. This call should be made in the fall prior to the desired year of entry.
- Applications must be received by December 3, 2007.
- Guided tours for parents are offered on a regularly scheduled basis from October through December. A tour of the school is mandatory, but parents may take the tour before they apply.
- Interviews with the children and parents begin in November.
- Following the guideline of the Independent Schools Admissions Association of Greater New York, applicants whose admissions folders are complete by January 15th are usually notified by the second week in February.
- All applicants are required to take the ERB assessment test.
- Careful attention is paid to the written application, the report from the previous school, test data when available, and to the parent and child interviews.
The Admissions Interviews
- For children applying to kindergarten and first grade, interviews are conducted in small group sessions lasting about thirty minutes. No tests are given.
- Older children spend two hours in a classroom with children of their own age. A VCS math test is given during the visit.
- Parents meet with a school administrator for an interview also lasting about thirty minutes.
We appreciate your interest in Village Community School. We hope that if you come for a visit you will find our admissions process informative and welcoming. We are eager to help you get to know us better.
